World Environment Day 2026 as a Platform for Collaboration
This perspective was highlighted during the 2026 World Environment Day commemoration organized by PT Berkah Kawasan Manyar Sejahtera (BKMS), the developer and operator of Java Integrated Industrial and Ports Estate (JIIPE) and Gresik Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The event brought together the Gresik Regency Government, academics, industrial tenants, coastal communities, and industry stakeholders to strengthen joint efforts in sustainable environmental management.

Why Long-Term Environmental Monitoring Matters
During the same forum, Professor Eddy Setiadi Soedjono, Professor of Environmental Science at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga, explained that environmental conditions in industrial estates and coastal areas cannot be assessed based on a single parameter or one-time observation.
Changes in water quality, coastal ecosystem conditions, and fisheries productivity are influenced by many interconnected factors. Long-term monitoring, periodic data, and multidisciplinary studies are therefore essential before drawing conclusions about the environmental condition of an area.
According to Prof. Eddy, a data-based approach provides an important foundation to ensure that every environmental management policy is objective, measurable, and sustainable.
Echoing this view, Sri Subaidah, Head of the Gresik Regency Environmental Agency, stated that industrial development and environmental protection must move forward together through consistent monitoring systems and concrete action on the ground.

Data-Driven Governance as the Basis for Sustainable Estate Management
As part of this approach, JIIPE regularly monitors environmental quality using accredited laboratory testing. The results refer to Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 as a basis for evaluation and decision-making in the sustainable management of the estate.

Concrete Actions for Coastal Ecosystems and Local Communities
Beyond strengthening environmental governance through scientific monitoring, JIIPE continues to implement coastal ecosystem rehabilitation initiatives designed to generate ecological benefits while supporting the livelihoods of local communities.
As part of the 2026 World Environment Day program, JIIPE worked with the Gresik Regency Government, academics, industrial tenants, coastal communities, and other stakeholders to plant 1,000 mangrove seedlings, release 1,000 fish fingerlings, and release 100 juvenile crabs in the Kalimireng area.
Arief Witjaksono, Head of the Gresik Regency Marine and Fisheries Agency, said that fish and crab restocking is expected to increase the productivity of fisheries resources while supporting the welfare of coastal communities.
We hope that fish availability around the area will continue to improve so fishermen do not need to travel farther offshore. Kalimireng coastal community figure Isharul expressed hope that collaboration among government, academia, business, and the community would continue to be strengthened so that industrial development remains aligned with environmental conservation.
Similarly, Hamzah Takim, Chairman of the Gresik Regency Kontak Tani Nelayan Andalan (KTNA), viewed mangrove planting along the Kalimireng River as a positive step in protecting coastal ecosystems while supporting the sustainability of fishermen's catchment areas.
Strengthening Environmental Infrastructure as Part of ESG Implementation
In addition to environmental monitoring and coastal ecosystem restoration, JIIPE continues to develop environmental infrastructure as part of its implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
JIIPE currently operates a Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R) Waste Processing Facility to support waste management within the estate. As the industrial estate continues to expand and operational activity increases, BKMS is preparing to develop the facility into an Integrated Waste Management Facility to strengthen independent, integrated, and sustainable waste management capacity.
